Kris and I would like to introduce our son Jonah Kristoffer Swinson. He allowed his mom the opportunity to go through labor for 16 hours before we realized he was not making any progress. The decision to have a C-section was made around 5:30 am and by 6:22 am on May 14th Jonah was born. He weighs 8 lb 5 oz and was 21 1/4 inches long. Kris was able to go with the baby while he was cleaned up. The two of them came to visit me while the doctor was taking care of me after the surgery. I was able to get a good look at him before the baby was taken to be cleaned up.
During the birth it was determined that meconium was present in the womb. This meant that Jonah had a bowel movement before being born. After further observation by the doctor it was apparent he had inhaled some of the meconium. This has caused the baby to have pneumonia and inflammation in his lungs. He has also developed pulmonary hypertension. These conditions caused him to be admitted to the special care nursery at Rex Hospital. He has been in great hands and the staff here at Rex is amazing. He is currently 99 % dependant on oxygen under an oxygen hood and his respiration rate is abnormally high. The doctors here at Rex ensure Kris and I that Jonah will get through this infection but it will take time. We are hoping to see improvement starting tomorrow. I will be discharged from the hospital on Saturday, however Jonah will likely need medical attention after I am discharged.
Yesterday was one of the happiest days of my life, and also the most emotionally challenging days of my life. Kris and I welcomed our baby boy to the world. We also had to deal with our little boy being sick. It was a hard day for me as a mother to not be able to hold my baby, change his diaper or feed him. We were able to get a good report this morning during our visit to the nursery. This afternoon Jonah was awake and it was amazing. He continued to look at Kris and I, knowing we were his parents. I love every minute of each visit. With each minute that passes I know we are that much closer to the day he is better, can be held and loved with a parent's touch.
Many of you have prayed for our family. Kris and I want to thank each of you for your thoughts and prayers. The doctors continue to remind us that Jonah will get through this and be a healthy happy baby boy soon enough.
